Yoga for Better Concentration & Focus

Yoga for Better Concentration & Focus

Technology has made things easier in many ways. Information is easy to get, in fact, there is an environment of information overload. There is a constant chattering around even on things that don’t concern you. This is very distracting for people. Even though there are so many tools and ways to get thins done, people often find themselves unable to focus.

Students cannot concentrate enough. People cannot focus on their work or life. Its easy to blame the technology, but its your mind that needs to focus. Finding focus in today’s over stimulated world is not an easy job but it’s not impossible either.

Thanks to the ancient technique of yoga, you can easily learn how to focus and bring back the mind-body balance.

How Yoga Helps in Concentration

Focus is all about bringing a balance between your mind and body. This helps in staying in the present. When you are fully aware of your mind, body and surrounding, you don’t get distracted. Yoga helps in alignment of your motion with your breathing. All the yoga poses whether easy or tough is about mind-body connection. Proper breathing is the key here. All these things help in making you more focused and concentrate easily on the task.

The Power of Focused Gaze

Also known is Drishti, focused gaze helps in improving your focus and attention on one thing. It is true that your focus goes where your eyes go. It can mean that your eyes focus on something that is physically present or your intentions. This is where the practice of Drishti comes in handy.

For practicing Drishti, all you have to do is focus on one thing in front of your eyes. It is better if its on the eye-level. You can also light a candle and focus on the flame. This will help you train your mind to stay focused on one thing. As you practice it more, you master the art and will have no difficulty focusing on things that is important. Slowly, you will see improvement in your focus level.

Practice the Tree Pose for Improving your Concentration

Tree pose is one of the most effective ways to improve your focus and concentration. Balancing on one leg requires a great deal of focus and effort. With regular practice, you will see how it helps in improving your concentration.

For practicing the tree pose, stand with your feet touching or a width apart. Make sure that you are focusing on something that is in front of you (Drishti). Now, inhale and raise your right foot and press it at the inner corner of your left knee. Don’t press it directly on the knee joint (very important). Raise your hand above your head, towards the sky and hold for 5 seconds.

Warrior Pose III or Virabhadrasana

Warrior poses are one of the best ways to improve your focus. It looks simple, but it is very effective. You will need all your focus and attention to balance your body on one leg. The most interesting things about yoga poses is that no matter how simple they are, if you lose focus, you lose balance. Which is why you need to focus 100% on the poses.

For warrior III pose, start with the mountain pose and stay focused on your breathing and body. Now, raise the right knee and kick it behind you and bring your torso to the front. Your hands should be stretching outward. Your right raised leg, upper body and your hands will be on same level, creating a horizontal line.

Your right leg will be stretched out, your left leg will be on the ground, your torso will be stretched forward facing the left side, right hand raised above and left hand on the mat or ground.
